What is 24K gold?
24K is pure gold. It is the karat used for gold bars, biscuits and coins, and it is the base rate announced every day by the sarafa association. All other karat rates are worked out from it. It contains 24 out of 24 parts, or 99.9% gold.
Because pure gold is soft and bends easily, 24K is rarely used for everyday jewellery. People buy 24K mainly as an investment or savings, usually as 1 tola, 5 tola or 10 tola bars.
How the 24K rate is calculated
The sarafa association announces the 24K rate each day. The 24K rate is that announced figure. Today 24K gold is Rs 435,636 per tola, so 24K gold works out to Rs 435,636 per tola. One tola is 11.664 grams.
