What is 21K gold?
21K gold is 87.5% pure gold. It is the most common karat for ready-made jewellery in Pakistan because it is strong enough for daily wear and still has a deep gold colour. It contains 21 out of 24 parts, or 87.5% gold.
Rings, chains, earrings and bangles sold in most Pakistani markets are 21K. When a jeweller quotes a price without naming the karat, ask whether it is 21K or 22K.
How the 21K rate is calculated
The sarafa association announces the 24K rate each day. The 21K rate is the 24K rate multiplied by 21/24 (87.5%). Today 24K gold is Rs 435,636 per tola, so 21K gold works out to Rs 381,182 per tola. One tola is 11.664 grams.
The hallmark for 21K is 875. When selling 21K jewellery, the jeweller pays for 87.5% gold content minus their deduction.
